How do you build trust with your audience before they buy from you?

I was recently sick in bed thanks to a lingering summer lurgy here in Australia. In that half-awake, feverish state, I found myself mindlessly scrolling through social media, barely paying attention to what I was seeing. You know the kind—when your brain is fogged over, your body is exhausted, and you’re just trying to pass the time.

Then I saw it—a question in a business group on Facebook about marketing:

“How do you build trust with your audience before they buy from you?”

Without thinking, I tapped out a response with the two remaining brain cells I had left, hit ‘post,’ and promptly forgot about it.

The next morning? My phone was blowing up.

Hundreds of friend requests from total strangers. Notifications pinging like crazy. I was convinced I’d been hacked. What the hell was happening?

Then it clicked—my comment had gone viral overnight.

I wrote something along the lines of–

“The same way you do with relationships in real life. When you meet someone new, whether it’s a friend or a romantic partner—you aren’t consciously trying to build trust, you’re just doing it. It happens naturally.

When you show up as your true authentic self and make an effort with someone (rather than expecting them to make the effort with you), share your passion, dreams, purpose, and focus on connection—incredible things happen.

The way I teach it is through THE MAGNET EFFECT:

When you’re showing up as your genuine, authentic self—you’re building a real, impactful magnetic force.

The people who ARE magnetised towards you are your FLOCK. Your people. Your community.

The people who AREN’T would’ve never bought from you anyway—and the thing with magnets is, they don’t just attract—they also repel.

THIS is the piece that most people are SO TERRIFIED of, that it prevents them from showing up at all.

But if you’re trying to cater to everyone out there? You’re not being authentic.

You’re watering down your message, personality, and impact.

Which leaves you blending into a crowd of sameness, and not really being ‘for’ anyone.

A magnet without charge is not worth investing in.”

I had written this while half-conscious, lying in bed, TV droning in the background, kids running wild. And yet, it had struck a chord.

Strangers from all over the world were agreeing, thanking me, cheering, telling me I should write a book (!). The sheer volume of responses floored me.

But why did this message resonate so deeply?

Because it was clear. It was charged. And it was true.

I have spent years refining my work, distilling my message, sharpening it to the point where it lands instantly—even when I’m barely trying. And that is exactly what YOU need to do, too.

Because if people don’t immediately understand your message, they don’t feel it. And if they don’t feel it, they won’t trust you enough to invest in you.

Trust isn’t built by trying to build trust—it happens through genuine connection.

When you show up fully charged, as your whole, unfiltered, weirdly wonderful self, you create a magnetic force:

  • The people who are meant to be in your orbit flock to you.
  • The people who aren’t? They repel—and that’s a good thing.

If you’re trying to be liked by everyone, you’re diluting the very thing that makes you stand out.

A magnet without charge isn’t worth investing in. The same applies to your messaging.

Anyone can put content out there. But magnetic messaging stops the scroll and pulls people in.

Here’s what makes the difference:

  • A Clear, Charged Message → Your audience should immediately feel something when they see your words.

  • A Defined Point of View → Stop saying what everyone else is saying. Say what you actually believe.

  • Emotional Precision → Speak to the real feelings behind your audience’s struggles and desires.

The reason that Facebook comment blew up? Because I’ve spent years refining my messaging—sharpening it to the point where it lands in seconds.

This is what it takes:

  • Not just “putting yourself out there.”
  • Not just “being visible.”
  • Not just “making content.”

It takes making your message so clear, so fully charged, that the right people can’t ignore it.

Actionable Steps to Build Trust & Magnetism in Your Messaging

1. Say What You Actually Mean

Watered-down messaging doesn’t build trust. Bold, specific statements do.

  • Instead of: “I help women feel better in their bodies.”
  • Say: “I help millennial women stop battling food guilt and actually enjoy eating again.”

2. Mirror Their Inner Dialogue

If your audience feels like you get them, they trust you.

  • Pay attention to the exact words your ideal clients use to describe their struggles.
  • Reflect those words back to them in your content so they feel seen.

3. Own Your Energy

If you’re hesitant, your audience will feel it. If you show up with conviction, they will, too.

  • Speak as if you already have the trust you’re trying to build.
  • Be the person they want to buy from—not just another option.

The Real Flex? Not Being Liked by Everyone

The goal isn’t universal approval. The goal is being unforgettable to the right people.

So ask yourself:

  • Are you showing up fully charged?
  • Is your message sharp enough to be remembered?
  • Are you speaking in a way that makes the right people feel drawn to you instantly?

Because that’s the difference between just posting—and being magnetic.
